Merriam-Webster (1913)

KK, (kā), the eleventh letter of the English alphabet, is nonvocal consonant. The form and sound of the letter K are from the Latin, which used the letter but little except in the early period of the language. It came into the Latin from the Greek, which received it from a Phœnician source, the ultimate origin probably being Egyptian. Etymologically K is most nearly related to c, g, h (which see).

In many words of one syllable k is used after c, as in crack, check, deck, being necessary to exhibit a correct pronunciation in the derivatives, cracked, checked, decked, cracking; since without it, c, before the vowels e and i, would be sounded like s. Formerly, k was added to c in certain words of Latin origin, as in musick, publick, republick; but now it is omitted.

See Guide to Pronunciation , §§ 240, 178, 179, 185.

History

K′ was a normal human being before the cloning operation, though nothing is known of his life at that time. As a child, K′ was taken away by the NESTS agents, as the experiment subject for the prototype. He would be infused with Kusanagi power, and then the NESTS cartel would prove how feasible it was to inject the immense Kusanagi power in a human being. They succeeded, but only in part. While K′ inherited the immense Kusanagi flames, he is unable to sustain so much power. Thus, K′'s creators decide to place a special glove on his hand so K′ can wield the power with no problem at all. Since K' was to become Krizalid, but was an incomplete clone, he was left with his incomplete name: K′. NESTS also altered K′'s memory, and the only thing K′ remembers of his past life is a little girl that kept calling him "brother" and cried out for him. But this memory only exists in dreams now.

The NESTS Saga

After activation, K′ was ordered by Krizalid to join Maxima and team up with Benimaru Nikaido and Shingo Yabuki in order to enter the King of Fighters tournament and collect battle data from the fighters of the competition in order to activate the Kyo Kusanagi clones around the world. The new Hero Team meets Krizalid in a sewer as arranged for one last battle, and K′ determined to use of this opportunity to take the man down. However, he turned out to be very outclassed, and it took intervention from Kyo Kusanagi to end Krizalid. None-too-pleased to meet the man who, in a sense, has made him into who he now is, K' challenges Kyo to a fight. Before the battle ends, steel blast doors separate the two, and after defying the NESTS cartel once more, the Hero Team narrowly escapes the assaulting Ikari extermination squad.

For the next year, K′ and Maxima continued to run from both the Ikari Warriors (hunting them as fugitive criminals) and the NESTS cartel (hunting them as traitors). K′ decides to deal with pursuers by cleaning up his image in KoF 2000. Vanessa and a Mexican wrestler called Ramon offer to team up with them. Though K′ does not trust them in the least, he grudgingly accepts her assistance anyway. He also begins to have nightmares about a lonely young girl screaming for him, her "brother". In addition, as the Hero Team arrives in Southtown for their final fight in the tournament, he is heavily plagued by deja vu. Upon arriving in an empty warehouse, he senses an intruder and tells Maxima to lead the other two out.

Now alone, he is confronted by a young woman dressed much like he is. She calls herself the "Anti-K′". The two fight, and K′ discovers that their attacks and similar fighting styles are essentially cancelling each other out. His power and stamina fading, K′ manages one last powerful blast of fire. To his surprise, the young woman is still standing - badly burnt, but smiling kindly. She introduces herself as Kula Diamond, and explains that she is under orders to stop Zero, a megalomaniac NESTS agent who intends to use the Zero Cannon to destroy his superiors.

When K′ arrived, Zero had trashed his teammates, but had taken his share of blows as well - Lin had poisoned him, and Maxima also taxed Zero heavily. Despite his own fatigue, K′ is able to best Zero and escape Southtown before the Zero Cannon fires. They are approached afterwards by a familiar figure. When she calls out K′'s name, it removes all doubts as to who she is - K′'s sister is Whip, a member of the Ikari Warriors. As a meteor shower consumes Southtown, K′ decides to discard his protective glove despite Maxima's warnings. To everyone's surprise, K′'s flaming power does not go out of control. He appears to have finally learned how to control the legendary crimson flames of the Kusanagi (though this is questionable - he is later shown putting on a new glove salvaged from one of the NESTS bases he destroyed alongside Maxima and Whip).

Throughout his trips to several NESTS bases located around the world, accompanied by Whip and Maxima, K′ finds something very suspicious: the bases they have tried to raid for such a long time are now deserted. He begins to suspect that someone is tracking their steps. During a raid on yet another abandoned NESTS building, he stumbles upon Lin, who has also been tracking NESTS in search of a traitor to his clan, Ron. Whip suggests taking him in to enter the next King of Fighters tournament, where NESTS will finally reveal themselves to the world. K′ couldn't care less about Lin, but wondered why NESTS would go public after destroying a city.

In the next tournament, K′ is exceptionally motivated to finally confront and take down NESTS, and rolls all the way to the final battle aboard a blimp. On board is the original Zero - the one they defeated a year ago was merely a clone. While his friends dealt with Zero's companions, K' focused on Zero. Despite being superior to his clone, Zero still loses to K', but accepts his defeat as a true warrior. The blimp docks with a space station and falls to Earth, but not before Zero tells them to get into the station.

On board, K′ meets Igniz, the ambitious leader of NESTS who intends to rule the world. In the fashion of the arrogant evil overlord, Igniz explains the project that involved the use of Kyo Kusanagi's DNA. K′, Kula and Krizalid were all products of that experiment, with the final product being an entirely artificial being called K9999. He then challenges K′ to a battle after giving K′ some of the memories he had lost for many years out of a desire to see a self-aware "clone".

Igniz overpowered K′ for the majority of the fight, but made the mistake of enraging K′ by completely restoring his memories. This act of spite caused K′ to rock the entire space station and nearly incinerate Igniz with a powerful fire attack. Igniz, however, manages to set off a self-destruct sequence that causes the space station to crash into Earth.

During the seemingly fatal fall, Kula Diamond (also on board) releases all of her ice powers at this time, allowing them to endure the passage through the atmosphere. After escaping from the space station which crashed into the ocean, K' swims towards land, and encounters Kula along the way, entirely exhausted. They decide to set aside their old differences and help each other to safety. K′ even fends off K9999 and Angel, who have come to eliminate the errant former NESTS agents (both K′ and Kula).

Afterwards, Lin leaves the team to continue his search for Ron. Maxima tells K′ that he will be leaving as well, to pay respects to his dead friend (who was killed by NESTS). K′ himself is left to wonder what will become of his future (as well as Kula's) in the aftermath of the NESTS cartel.

The Ash Saga

After the fall of NESTS, K′ and Maxima had continued to live out their lives in a vagabond manner. Whip returned to the Ikari Warriors, and Kula remained with her guardian from NESTS, Diana. However, in 2003, a new King of Fighters tournament was announced. K′ had no interest, loathing the tournament, but was approached by Chin Gentsai of the Psycho Soldiers. Chin, sensing an evil power brooding, requested K' enter the tournament. K′ reacted angrily, but was calmed by Maxima, who convinced him to consider the matter. Not long after, K′'s sister called, requesting that they join a team with her, under orders from her commanding officer, Heidern. K′ relented, and entered the tournament. While K′ found nothing of personal interest in the tournament, he did encounter several villainous figures that filled him with a sense of foreboding. He cast these feelings to the side, but no sooner had he done this then his flames began to run out of control for the first time in years. Once he finally managed to get his powers under control, Maxima asked him if his glove was malfunctioning. However, K′ replied that the problem didn't lie with the glove, but at the root of Kyo's powers. Though his meaning was unclear, his interest in the unfolding events was piqued.

As the next tournament arrived, Whip joined the Ikari Warrior once more, taking the place of her superior, Leona, who was unable to participate. At Whip's suggestion, Kula was called and asked to join K′'s team, which would again participate in the tournament under orders of Heidern. During the tournament, a frightening figure named Magaki was revealed as the host. However, after Magaki's death, K′ and the Ikari Warriors brought biological samples of him to Heidern. At the debriefing that followed on the Ikari Warriors plane, there was an attack, which ceased when Heidern agreed to leave with two of the assailants. This is all of the storyline involving K′ at this time.

Gameplay

  • K′ possesses what may very well be the oddest HDM in the game KOF '02, the Crimson Star Ride has K′ slide forward a very short distance, and if he touches the opponent... he teleports behind them, angrilly throws a "thumbs-down" (one of his winposes) and the opponent explodes in a ball of fire for considerable damage. This move returns in Maximum Impact 2, only working as a "reversal-type" super instead.
  • For KOF '03 and XI, K′ comes equipped with a brand new DM titled Heaven's Drive, in which he performs the two versions of his Crow Bite move (weak, then hard) and ends the whole thing with a massive air kick (crow bites plus)... all in about two seconds.
  • From KOF2001 and onward K′ and Kula have always had special intros and victory quotes over each other.
  • K' was used as the protagist's user character in the "Sprite War Online" series, often using more cinematic versions of his attacks.

Trivia

  • The term cloning used in KOF is done by extracting the DNA and inject it into a cell then fertilise it inside a big metallic cylinder (K9999 was born likewise). Although K′ is called a clone of Kyo, he technically is not because he was injected with Kyo's DNA rather than born as one.
  • On the back of K′'s jacket it says "A Beast of Prey" (written in capitals).
  • The origins of both K′ and Maxima can be found in the Psikyo arcade game The Fallen Angels (Daraku Tenshi in Japan). This obscure 1998 release stars an emaciated goth in tight leather pants named Cool, along with a brawny, cybernetically enhanced police officer named Harry Ness. The man responsible for the design of both characters migrated to SNK shortly after The Fallen Angels was released, and elements of Cool and Harry Ness' design were used in the creation of K′ and Maxima. The end result is that K′ looks nearly identical to Cool.
  • K′ is referred to as "K Prime" in the King of Fighters Evolution (Dreamcast) instruction booklet, although the logo on the front of the manual is a flaming K with a dash.
  • Another K′ (K′'s Another Striker in KOF 2000) is commonly believed and mistaken to be what K′ used to look like before he was injected with the DNA. Quoting from the KoF 10th Anniversary website, it was the final rendition of K′ outside of a last-minute hairstyle change.
  • K′ appears as a Striker in KOF EX for the Game Boy Advance.
  • He wears a motorcycle helmet in his default rigging model in KOF: Maximum Impact. His alternate rigging model is a samurai with an eyepatch.
  • One of K's alternate color scheme in 2D King of Fighters matches Kula's normal color scheme: Bluish-white hair and pinkish purple suit, with a yellow gauntlet, plus a skin color matching Kula's. In KoF XI, even his flames are tinted blue-purple, though upon unguarded impact, the flames will still burn the opponent in red.

K...!, known as Karat until 2005, is a German rock band, founded in what was then East Germany in 1975. One of East Germany's best-known bands, Karat were also popular outside the GDR, with their most notable success their 1982 album Der blaue Planet (The Blue Planet), which was one of the year's top sellers in West Germany.

History

Über sieben Brücken earned Karat a following outside East Germany

The band developed from the previous group Panta Rhei, which dissolved when singer Veronika Fischer left to pursue a solo career in 1973. The initial Karat lineup consisted of singer Hans-Joachim ("Neumi") Neumann, keyboardist and songwriter Ulrich "Ed" Swillms, bassist Henning Protzmann, drummer Konrad Burkert, guitarist Herbert Dreilich and guitarist Ulrich Pexa. The following year, Burkert was replaced by Michael Schwandt and Pexa by Bernd Römer. Neumann left the band in 1977 due to military service, and Austrian-born Dreilich became the band's sole vocalist.

The group released several singles, which were compiled on their 1978 self-titled debut album. Although much of this was fairly pedestrian rock, it contained the hit single "König der Welt" (King Of The World), which established much of the subsequent Karat sound, a melodic brand of progressive rock. Poet Kurt Demmler wrote the words, and like most of Karat's output the song was philosophical in character.

The band's second album, Über sieben Brücken (1979) was its breakthrough. It contained the seven-minute Albatros (Albatross), the lyrics to which (Der Albatros kennt keine Grenzen, "The albatross knows no borders") were an indirect criticism of the Berlin Wall and the GDR's travel restrictions.

The title track "Über sieben Brücken mußt du geh'n" (You Must Cross Seven Bridges), is the band's best-known song, and helped introduce Karat to audiences outside East Germany, thanks to West German singer Peter Maffay, who recorded a cover version of it that became a massive hit for him in 1980.

The band's third album Schwanenkönig (The Swan King), released in 1980, cemented its following in both East and West Germany, although it failed to produce any hit singles. Its cerebral lyrics were penned by journalist Norbert Kaiser, who would be responsible for the band's lyrics for the following six years.

In contrast, the 1982 album Der blaue Planet sold more than 1.3 million copies, propelled by its uptempo, radio-friendly title track about the dangers of nuclear and environmental cataclysm; the song is still frequently heard on German radio. Der blaue Planet became not only Karat's best-selling record, but the biggest-selling album of any East German artist, inside or outside the country. In 1984, the band were honored with the National Prize of East Germany.

Karat turned away from the mainstream appeal of Der blaue Planet on its follow-up album Die sieben Wunder der Welt (The Seven Wonders Of The World) in 1984, although it also ended up being successful, and it is considered by many fans to be a high point of the band's output. In 1986 Karat received the Goldene Europa, West German television's oldest award.

Bassist Protzmann left the band to be replaced by Christian Liebig for Fünfte Jahreszeit in 1987, a more commercial release with tracks such as "Der Doppelgänger" and "Glocke Zweitausend" (The 2000 Bell), the latter featuring Silly singer Tamara Danz, with whom Swillms, Römer and Dreilich had performed in the East German supergroup, the Gitarreros.

However, in 1987, principal composer Swillms left Karat, citing health concerns; the band had already recruited second keyboardist Thomas Kurzhals in 1984. (Swillms would return as a part-time member 18 years later.) The band's first album without him, ... im nächsten Frieden (...In The Next Peacetime), was released in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Although it contained a duet with Peter Maffay on a new version of "Über sieben Brücken" it was largely ignored, as Karat, like other East German bands such as the Puhdys and City, seemed to be passé, as their fans were now able to buy western albums with ease. During 1990, many top rock acts performed in East Germany for the first time, and free shows such as Roger Waters' The Wall extravaganza in Berlin, which featured no East German performers, took their toll on East German performers' fanbases.

Karat recorded their second self-titled album in 1991; it was meant to suggest a new beginning. Instead, it sold poorly, and Karat would not record again for four years.

The lull in popularity of East German recording artists ended about 1993-1994, and Karat's albums, which had been re-released on compact disc with DSB, the successor to the East German state recording label Amiga, sold well. The band celebrated its 20th anniversary at a sold-out concert at the horse racing track at Karlshorst in Berlin, with appearances by well-wishers including City, the Puhdys, and singer Ute Freudenberg. Coinciding with the concert was the band's new album, Die geschenkte Stunde (The Given Hour), the first with keyboardist Martin Becker, which sold well to the band's core of eastern fans. Thereafter, Karat was one of the former East Germany's top live acts, although they eschewed the Ostalgie movement, emphasizing new material in concert. The 1997 followup, Balance, enjoyed similar success.

In 1998 lead vocalist Herbert Dreilich suffered a stroke on stage; he returned to performing one year later. However, Karat's performance schedule slowed down in subsequent years. In 2000 they celebrated their 25th anniversary in front of 20,000 people in Berlin, with Swillms making a guest appearance; the stage was also shared with the Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg and Peter Maffay. This concert was released as a live album and DVD the following year. The 2003 album Licht und Schatten (Light and Shadow) was to be his last (notably, it contained the only Karat song in English, "Someone Got Hurt," a demo from the 1980s). A tour in 2004 together with the Puhdys and City was cancelled at the last minute when Dreilich was diagnosed with lymph cancer. He died in December that year, at the age of 62.

At Herbert Dreilich's suggestion, the band replaced him with his 35-year-old son Claudius Dreilich, previously manager of an IKEA furniture store in Austria. The younger Dreilich bore an uncanny resemblance to his father, both in appearance and in his vocal style, and was immediately accepted by the group's fans, and the rest of the band, whom he had known for many years. Swillms rejoined the band, although he only did some several performances live with them.

However, due to a legal dispute with the elder Dreilich's widow, who claimed the name "Karat" because her husband had trademarked it in 1998, the band began to perform under the name K...! in 2006. In December 2006 they implemented a special christmas-tour named "Winterzeit" with the a-cappella-pop-band "mëdlz" as special guests.[1]

History and usage

Egyptian hieroglyph D Proto-Semitic K Phoenician K Etruscan K Greek Kappa

It comes from the Greek Κ or κ (Kappa) developed from the Semitic Kap, symbol for an open hand. This in turn was likely adapted by Semites who had lived in Egypt, from the hieroglyph for "hand" representing D for the Egyptian word for hand, d-r-t. The Semites evidently assigned it the sound value /k/ instead, because their word for hand started with that sound.

This Semitic value of /k/ for this letter was maintained in most classic as well as modern languages, although Latin abandoned the use of K almost completely, preferring C. When Greek words were taken into Latin, the Kappa was converted to C. Some words from other alphabets were also transliterated into C. Therefore, the Romance languages have K only in words from still other language groups. The Celtic languages also chose C over K, and this influence carried over into Old English. Today, English is the only Germanic language that productively uses hard C in addition to K.

Some English linguists prefer to reverse the Latin transliteration process for proper names in Greek, spelling Ceres as "Keres", for example. And the writing down of languages that don't have their own alphabet with the Latin one has resulted in a standardization of the letter K for this sound, as in Kwakiutl.

Sometimes, in advertising it is used instead of C.[1]

In the International phonetic alphabet, [k] is the symbol for the voiceless velar plosive.

Several other alphabets also use characters with sharp angles to indicate the sound /k/ or syllables that start with a /k/, for example: Arabic ك, Hebrew כ (in some fonts), Korean ㄱ. This kind of phonetic-visual association was studied by Wolfgang Köhler. However, there are also many examples of rounded letters for /k/, like ค in Thai or Գ in Armenian.
